In this 2002 image, NASA astronaut David Wolf deploys a camera outside the International Space Station using the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Wolf visited the ISS as part of NASA's STS-112 mission, which included a crew of six aboard the space shuttle Atlantis.
Since 1998, more than 270 spacewalks have taken place outside the International Space Station. These spacewalks have established new experiments, refurbished equipment and kept the station functioning as an orbiting laboratory vessel. As we expand humanity's presence in low Earth orbit, we are also contributing to the development of new destinations in orbit. Maybe the next spacewalk will happen sooner than you think!
Image description:
An astronaut in a spacesuit floats above the Earth. The astronaut is facing right and tilted downwards at a 45-degree angle (from the camera's point of view); his feet are attached to a platform attached to a long robotic arm. Behind the astronaut, the blue and white hues of the Earth fill the background.
