NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and his crewmates safely separated from the International Space Station (ISS) and landed on Earth with Soyuz MS-23 on 27 September 2023.
Rubio's space flight was the longest solo space flight by a US astronaut, breaking the record previously held by NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei with 355 days.
Rubio and his crewmates, Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin, were launched on 21 September 2022 aboard the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft. Due to a coolant leak, the Soyuz MS-22 capsule returned to Earth without its crew, and the Soyuz MS-23 capsule was launched in its place on 23 February 2023.
During his mission, Rubio completed approximately 5,936 orbits and travelled more than 157 million miles (253 million km), roughly equivalent to 328 trips to the Moon and back. In addition to spending hours on the space station conducting scientific activities, Rubio's extended mission provided an opportunity to observe the effects of long-duration spaceflight on humans in preparation for NASA Artemis missions to the Moon and manned exploration of Mars.
Coming home from space after 371 days is also a bit difficult, how do you think it feels?
