This image of the irregular galaxy NGC 2814, about 85 million light-years away, was imaged with the NASA Hubble Space Telescope.
Although this galaxy appears to be isolated, NGC 2814 actually has three close (in astronomical terms) galactic neighbours not seen in this image: A side-barred spiral galaxy known as NGC 2820, an irregular galaxy called IC 2458, and a non-side-barred spiral galaxy called NGC 2805. Together, these four galaxies make up the group of galaxies known as Holmberg 124.
Image description:
An irregular galaxy, a narrow strip of stars intersected by faint dust lanes. It looks like a beam of light in the centre of a dark background, surrounded by a bright glow. A scattering of small, distant galaxies and a single bright star surround the galaxy.
