Space scientists have detected a brown dwarf whose temperature is even higher than the Sun. The brown dwarf, named WD0032-317B, is the only one of its kind.
An international space research team led by Israeli astronomer Na'ama Hallakoun has encountered a remarkable celestial body 1,400 light years away from Earth. This celestial body, categorised as a "brown dwarf" because it is neither a star nor a planet, was found to be hotter than the surface of the Sun. Scientists have named the celestial body "WD0032-317B".
Brown dwarfs have always been known as mysterious celestial objects. Because there are so many unknowns about them. WD0032-317B maximised all these unknowns. Because it was thought that brown dwarfs were hotter than planets, but they could not reach temperatures as high as stars (i.e. the Sun). The findings obtained from WD0032-317B led to a re-discussion of what has been known so far.
It is already known that the surface temperature of the Sun is about 5,505 degrees Celsius. Measurements made for WD0032-317B, however, revealed that the temperature of this brown dwarf is 7.727 degrees Celsius. In other words, WD0032-317B, which is not categorised as a star, is 2,222 degrees Celsius hotter than the Sun. Scientists say that WD0032-317B is the only one of its kind. No brown dwarf detected so far has been able to reach these temperatures.
According to experts, what makes WD0032-317B important is not only that it is hotter than the Sun. Measurements revealed that this brown dwarf orbits close to its star. Scientists believe that further research will provide new information about gas-oriented planets like Jupiter. On the other hand, studies with WD0032-317B are not only important for planets like Jupiter. Researchers believe that with this discovery, they will be able to reach important conclusions about exoplanets such as KELT-9b.
The findings on WD0032-317B are quite limited. Experts may continue their studies for years.
