IC 1805, the centre of the Heart Nebula, hosts cosmic clouds with spectacular shapes in the sky. These clouds have been shaped by the powerful stellar winds and radiation emitted by the massive, hot stars of the young Melotte 15 star cluster. The star cluster, which is about 1.5 million years old, forms a striking contrast with dark clouds of dust amidst glowing atomic gas. The observed image is a combination of narrow- and broadband telescopic images and covers an area about 15 light-years across. In the Hubble Palette, the green, red and blue hues represent the radiation emitted by ionised hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen atoms, respectively.
IC 1805 is located about 7,500 light-years away in the direction of the constellation The Queen (Latin: ‘Cassiopeia’). When viewed from a wide angle, its distinctive heart shape is clearly visible, which is why this region is known as the ‘Heart Nebula’.
Released on 17 September 2024 as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), this impressive image was taken by Richard McInnis.
