On Saturday 30 December 2023, NASA's Solar System Juno spacecraft made the closest flyby of Jupiter's moon Io by any spacecraft in more than 20 years. The JunoCam instrument on board the spacecraft, which came within 930 miles (1,500 km) of the surface of the most volcanic world in our solar system, acquired images of Io. This image shows the high northern latitudes of Io.
A second ultra-close flyby of Io is planned for February, when Juno will again come within about 930 miles (1,500 km) of the surface.
Image description:
Colour image of Jupiter's moon Io. The light chestnut brown moon is half illuminated by the Sun from the left. Its patchy surface is mottled with tan and grey. Mountains can be seen rising in relief, especially along the terminator line that runs through the centre of the Moon and separates the day half from the night half.
