This Hubble Space Telescope image provides a window into the FS Tau star system. The bright object near the centre of the image is FS Tau A, with FS Tau B (obscured by a dark, vertical strip of dust) at the far right.
While these young cosmic objects illuminate the clouds of gas and dust surrounding the star nest, we know that the system is about 2.8 million years old. This is quite young compared to our Sun's age of about 4.6 billion years.
FS Tau B is a nascent star surrounded by a protoplanetary disc. This is a crepe-shaped collection of dust and gas left over from the star's birth that will eventually become a planet. A jet of blue material is ejected from this protostar and ionised gas hits nearby gas and dust clouds at high speeds.
This system is located about 450 light years away.
In the image, a bright point of light shines with diffraction spikes near the right centre and is surrounded by clouds glowing against black space. A jet of blue material, partially obscured by the clouds, extends roughly across the centre of the image.
