EXPLOSIONS FROM THE PAST: NGC 4051

The galaxy NGC 4051, seen in the #HubbleClassic image, is located about 45 million light-years from Earth. Although it looks like a quiet spiral galaxy, it has actually witnessed several supernova explosions, violent jets of light and matter that occur at the moment of death of giant stars.

Image description:

A massive spiral galaxy fills the image. Its yellow center can be seen just to the right of the center, surrounded by vast spiral arms filled with dark brown dust and purple star clusters.
