In the image, the Heart (right) and Soul (left) nebulae are gigantic star-production factories stretching almost 580 light-years across. The stars inside these nebulae are less than a few million years old - making them quite young compared to others, such as our 5 billion-year-old Sun. These young stars are responsible for the bubble shapes of the heart and soul, as radiation and winds from the stars blow dust outwards.
These two nebulae are located 6,000 light years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. They are part of the star formation complex in the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy.
This image is an infrared mosaic from NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) telescope. It covers a huge area of the sky 10 times the width and 8 times the height of the full moon.
Image Description:
This image shows the Heart and Soul nebulae. The nebula on the right is the Heart nebula, IC 1805, named after its shape, which resembles a human heart. On the left is the Spirit nebula. Both nebulae appear as green gas bubbles covered by white clouds. Inside each are fiery red gas patches. Vivid blue stars fill the entire scene.
