The Crab Nebula is located 6,500 light years from Earth in the constellation Taurus. NASA's James Webb telescope has given us new information about the structure of this exploded star.
A supernova remnant consists of several different components, indicated by different colours: double-ionised sulphur (represented by red-orange), ionised iron (blue), dust (yellow-white and green) and synchrotron emission (white), a type of electromagnetic radiation.
Image description:
Huge clouds of gas spread diagonally outwards and dominate the image. The clouds vary in colour and texture from cottony white to fiery orange and smoky blue. In the background, blue, yellow and red stars dot the black space.
