Eight years ago, the NASA Hubble Space Telescope observed mesmerising light shows in the atmosphere of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. Astronomers captured this image on 30 June 2016 using Hubble's ultraviolet capabilities.
Auroras are created when high-energy particles enter a planet's atmosphere near its magnetic poles and collide with gas atoms.
The Juno spacecraft was in the solar wind near Jupiter when this image was taken and was about to enter Jupiter's orbit on 4 July 2016. While Hubble observed and analysed auroras on Jupiter, Juno measured the properties of the solar wind: a perfect collaboration between a telescope and a space probe.
