As you Meet Your Cosmic Neighbours, check out this new Hubble image of a dwarf irregular galaxy.
A relatively isolated galaxy, VV124 is being studied by astronomers to see if it is a relatively pristine and older galaxy.
Astronomical theories suggest that the lowest-mass dwarf galaxies may have been among the first to form in our universe!
Thanks to Hubble's extraordinary resolution, it is possible to see individual stars in even the densest regions of VV124.
Image description:
A rectangular blob of stars runs diagonally across the image from top left to bottom right. It contains stars in blue, orange, yellow and white. The highest stellar density is near the image centre and towards the lower right. This region also contains clusters of bright, light blue stars. Star density decreases in all directions as you move away from the core. A number of bright, distant galaxies adorn the scene, and a few shine through the galaxy.
