In the constellation Canes Venatici, 24 million light-years away, lies a glowing spiral galaxy. Observations by NASA's Hubble space telescope and ground-based images reveal a remarkable feature of this galaxy: an extra pair of arms, seen as beams of red hydrogen gas, probably caused by complex motions around the central black hole.
Scientists think that large amounts of gas from the galaxy are falling into the supermassive black hole and feeding it.
In the centre of the image is a spiral galaxy with a yellow-white nucleus surrounded by blue and pink dots and red and purple clouds. The galaxy is surrounded by a black area dotted with small stars.
Three pence more and it's red?
