To celebrate the completion of a successful first year, NASA has released a James Webb Space Telescope image of a small star formation region in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex.
Image Description:
Red double contrasting jets from young stars fill the darker upper half of the image. In the lower centre, a pale yellow, cave-like structure with a bright star at its centre glows, its top tilted towards two o'clock. The dust of the cave structure begins to fly towards eight o'clock. Above the arched top of the dust cave there are 3 groups of stars with diffraction spikes. At the top of the arch of the glowing dust cave is a dark cloud with a streamer curving downwards from the right side. The dark shadow of the cloud appears to be trapped in the centre, with light appearing triangularly above and below the trapping, suggesting the presence of a star within the cloud. The largest jets of red matter emanate from within this dark cloud, which is thick and looks like the jagged face of a cliff, glowing brighter at the edges. In the top centre, a star displays another trapped dark shadow, this time vertically larger. To the left of this star is a thinner, fainter region.
