Between the night of 7 May and the morning of 8 May, solar flares danced across the sky. These energetic flares were captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and look truly spectacular!
The Sun is a constantly changing source of energy, as if in a stage performance. Its activity levels are constantly fluctuating between high and low. During periods of high activity, we can see things like dramatic bursts of energy from the Sun.
Among these explosions, the most powerful are known as ‘X-class explosions’. And this time, two of them were observed! When the Sun's activity reaches its maximum in an 11-year cycle, the number of such flares increases. So far this year, there have been 13 Class X solar flares.
However, when these flares are aimed at Earth, they can cause concern. They can affect satellites, GPS signals and radio communications. Therefore, many space and ground-based vehicles should be prepared for such effects.
Let's take a look at a photo to get a closer look at these spectacular flares:
Footage of two X-class solar flares! The ultraviolet light has been converted to orange in the video, so that these interesting loops ejected from the Sun's surface can be seen more clearly.
