NASA astronaut @astro_pettit used a tracking device of his own design to record this star-filled view out the window while docked to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX Dragon crew vehicle. Pettit used an exposure time of 25 seconds at ISO 3200 to create this impressive star image. Lengthening the shutter time allows more light to reach the camera's sensor. In addition, the cameras favored by astronauts are often designed to operate with higher sensitivity in low-light conditions. These features make it easier to capture bright stars in photographs.
Images of Earth from orbit are usually taken with the right exposures to view the bright planet, but are too short to record the many stars that are much fainter in comparison.

Looking through an oval, we can see space covered with white stars. There are two blue blobs: the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two irregular dwarf galaxies. Looking down, Earth's atmosphere glows red and green.
