This image captures a spectacular scene revealed in mid-infrared light. Three distinct columns of semi-opaque gas and dust in shades of grey-blue stretch out. As each column decreases in size from left to right, together they form an almost ghostly silhouette.
The leftmost column ends at the top of a red star, characterised by tiny pointed projections at its tips. At the bottom of this column are several areas of dark dust with stars forming outward protrusions, some of which glow as red dots.
The other two columns are located below and to the right of the first column. In the background, glowing shades of orange-red mixed with black are visible, with the strongest colours forming a V-shaped glow in the upper centre of the image.
There are several dozen small bright white and blue stars scattered throughout the image. Larger stars are embedded in the columns, appearing as red orbs. This breathtaking sight is a dramatic example of star formation and evolution.
