Supernovae, such as the supernova remnant known as Cassiopeia A (Cas A), are vital for the existence of life. Elements such as calcium in our bones and iron in our blood are released into interstellar space by these explosions, contributing to the formation of new stars and planets.
This relic is the youngest known trace of a massive star exploding in our galaxy.
Image Description:
A circular nebula of complex structure. On the outside of the nebula, particularly on the left side of the image, there are curtains of material glowing a fiery orange colour. Inside this outer shell is a ring of mottled threads decorated with bright pink clumps and knots. A greenish ring is also visible, extending from the upper right towards the central cavity. Translucent blue, green and red filaments are scattered throughout the image.
Do you think our life looks like this?
