In this impressive image from ESA WEBB, discover the molecular cloud L1527, in which a protostar is evolving!
Located in the constellation Taurus, about 460 light-years from Earth, this colorful landscape is rich in cosmic chemistry. The blue and filamentary structures originate from organic molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In the red region, the energetic cloud of gas and dust surrounding a new star stands out. The white areas? These represent a mixture of PAHs, ionized gas and various molecules.
As the protostar matures, it will shoot out energetic jets that will consume much of the surrounding cloud and push it outwards. Eventually, this spectacular light show will come to an end and the star will show itself brighter and brighter in our telescopes.
