Twice the size of all the planets in our solar system combined, Jupiter is classified as a gas giant, consisting mostly of hydrogen and helium. Deep in the atmosphere of the gas giant, hydrogen gas is compressed to a liquid state by intense pressure and heat. Scientists are still trying to determine whether there is a central core of solid matter at the centre of the planet or whether it is more like a big, thick, hot soup.
Our Juno spacecraft captured two of Jupiter's major rotating storms on its 38th close flyby of the gas giant in 2021, as the spacecraft travelled just 3,815 miles (6,140 km) above clouds of ammonium and water.

Blue, grey and tan clouds swirl and merge in this close-up of Jupiter. In the centre of the image is a tan oval storm with white outer edges, a large white circular storm in the lower left, and blue clouds around the two large storms.
