Jupiter's Great Red Spot and the planet's turbulent southern atmosphere are dramatically visible in this colourised image taken by NASA Solar System's Juno spacecraft on 12 February 2019.
The Great Red Spot, a swirling cloud structure twice as wide as Earth, has been tracked over the giant planet for more than 300 years. In 2021, data from Juno revealed that Jupiter's storms are much deeper than expected; some storms descend 100 kilometres below the cloud tops, while others, like the Great Red Spot, reach depths of more than 350 kilometres. The solar-powered Juno spacecraft, which is the width of a basketball court, orbits Jupiter in wide, elliptical orbits, seeking answers to questions about the origin and evolution of the giant planets and our Solar System.

Jupiter stands out prominently against the black background of space. Details of the planet's streaks and vortices are clearly visible, along with the Great Red Spot in the upper right corner. The lower part of Jupiter is lost in shadow.
