This NASA Hubble image of the Crab Nebula reveals the mysterious glow of a star that died long ago in a supernova explosion. But despite this frightening appearance, this object still has a beating "heart". Buried in the centre, this "heart" is the centre of the star, beating in a regular rhythm.
This "heart" is the collapsed core of the exploded star. This core, known as a neutron star, is compressed into an extremely dense sphere only a few miles across, despite having the mass of the Sun. The bright, star-like object in the centre of the image is this small but powerful neutron star.

Swirls filled with bright green hues stand out in the spatial landscape. In the centre, the glowing "heart" of the Crab Nebula is clearly visible. In the distance, stars dot the sky.
How beautiful even the heart of a dying star looks!
