THE REMAINS OF A SUPERNOVA EXPLOSION: CRAB NEBULA

The Chandra and NASA James Webb space telescopes meet once again with this spectacular image of the Crab Nebula.

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion observed from Earth in 1054. At the centre of this nebula, which is about 6500 light years from Earth, is a neutron star with a diameter of about 20 kilometres and rotates about 30 times per second!

THE REMAINS OF A SUPERNOVA EXPLOSION: CRAB NEBULA

Image Description:

The image shows a cloud of material, mostly red and orange in colour, resembling roaring flames. At the centre of the nebula is a structure of tilted blue and white clouds, resembling the shape of a spinning top. This spinning top is surrounded by feather-like structures covered in electric blue light. In the centre, where the spinning top meets the flame-like body, is a bright white ball of light. This is the neutron star at the heart of the Crab Nebula. Concentric rings surround the star, as if it were a small stone thrown into a puddle. From the bottom of the neutron star, a stream of material can be seen, resembling boiling vapour escaping from a valve.

There's something like a tornado in the centre of this immersive image. Do you see it?
