Active regions on the Sun came together on 8 October 2014 to resemble the face of a jack-o-lantern. The image was taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, which monitors the Sun at all times from its orbit in space.
The active regions in this image appear brighter because they emit more light and energy. They are signs of an intense and complex cluster of magnetic fields suspended in the Sun's atmosphere, the corona. This image combines two sets of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths of 171 and 193 Ångström, creating a Halloween-like appearance with typical gold and yellow colours.
