These infrared images of the Horsehead Nebula were taken by the Hubble and Webb space telescopes, two powerful instruments working together to explore mysteries deep in the universe. The nebula is located about 1,300 light-years away and can be studied in near-infrared light thanks to these two observatories.
The light of young stars in this enormous nebula is detected by the sensitive sensors of Hubble and Webb. These young stars are located in the interior of the nebula and shine like jewels against the background of distant galaxies.
In 2013, in honour of its 23rd anniversary, Hubble released this breathtaking image, which can be regarded as a magnificent gift from the universe. Webb's new infrared images, focusing on the so-called ‘mane’ of the Horsehead Nebula, allow us to examine this magnificent structure even more closely.
In the image, a large structure of gas and dust is clearly visible against a background of black space with distant stars and galaxies. Some stars shine through the darker regions of the nebula, attracting attention. In the upper left corner is the white text ‘Hubble’, indicating that the image was taken by the Hubble space telescope.
