It was built in the 12th century by Bishop Sunesen of Roskilde. Dragsholm Castle was used as a mansion for the rich in the early periods. In later periods it was used as a prison and is currently used as a hotel.
Dragsholm Castle is famous for the 4 ghosts that are believed to haunt it. The first of these is the ghost of the Reverend Ronnow, who was killed while a prisoner in prison.
The second is the ghost of the 4th Earl of Bothwell, who died of madness in the prison where he was imprisoned as a political prisoner.
The third is the ghost of Ejler Brockenhuus, who was chained in the castle dungeon and left to die. Also known as the Mad Aga.
The last one is the ghost of Celina Bovles. also known as the White Lady. She was a noble who fell in love with a commoner and became pregnant by him. When her father found out about this affair with a lowly person, he locked Celina Bovles up in Dragsholm. Her skeleton was lost for centuries. In 1930, when the castle was being restored, labourers found her skeleton in the wall.
