Flamingos, also known as the red crane in our country, are pink-coloured creatures with long, lanky legs, curved beaks and long necks that look beautiful to our eyes. Who doesn't love a pink bird?
In addition to their striking appearance, they have another remarkable feature. That feature is that they feed on milk that looks like blood. So they feed their young with it.
The Science Channel recorded footage of a flamingo trying to feed its young. This seemed out of character with all the feeding we've seen before, because at first glance it looks like the top flamingo is stabbing the bottom flamingo in the head with its beak, making it bleed. But this is not the case!
The father flamingo places his beak on the mother's head until the milk reaches her beak, then the younger flamingo comes to drink the milk directly from there.
This milk is characterised by its red colour. It also comes from a vesicle in the father's body. Flamingos also produce a red-coloured "milk" in their digestive tract and feed it to their young by vomiting it up.
Isn't that interesting?
