Murphy's Law at work in all our negativity. Who the hell is Murphy? He's Edward Murphy. An engineer who conducted tests in 1949 to see how much acceleration the human body could withstand. In these tests, a volunteer sits on a rocket that can go faster than sound. Various measuring instruments worth millions of dollars are placed on it. Then launch!
Dr Stapp volunteered for this test and Murphy took care of the instruments. The instruments weren't connected properly, and that's when things went wrong. When things went wrong, they asked Murphy what happened, what was the problem. Murphy would not stop, he would paste the answer:
Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
Long version:
If there is more than one possibility to get something done and one of these possibilities will lead to undesirable results or disaster, this possibility will definitely be realised.
Write it down and it became law. Just kidding, that's not what happened. In fact, it was Dr Stapp who called it law. Our subject, Dr Stapp, who is also a brave philosopher.
The moral of the story is that our endeavours may fail, mistakes may be made. But it is necessary to be aware of possible bad scenarios. So Murphy's law is actually a strategy to prevent mistakes.
Stoic philosophers like Marcus Aurelius did not call it Murphy's law but 'premeditatio malorum'. It means to design evil, to be ready for evil. If you prepare yourself for the worst outcome, you will either encounter it or a better surprise.
When we come to the present day, negative scenarios are taken into consideration when developing many products and services from the smallest companies to the largest companies. This is called premortem.
Murphy is a symbol that informs us not to do wrong in case of possible bad situations. When the glass is half full, it is necessary to be aware of the empty side. This approach made Murphy famous. More importantly, it allowed Dr Stapp to survive the tests and made him the fastest person in the world for a while. Later, he began to design puppets that could be used as test subjects instead of humans in such tests.
