Eski bir Bizans (Doğu Roma) kilisesi olan Aziz Nikolaos Kilisesi, günümüzde Antalya Demre’de bulunur. Aziz Nikolaos MS 520’de bu kilisede piskopos olarak hizmet etmiştir. Daha doğrusu bu kilise eski Hristiyan kilisesinin temelleri üzerine inşa edilmiştir. Kullanımı 5-12.yüzyıl arasında tarihlenmiştir.

Noel Baba’nın tarihi esin kaynağı olan, Myra antik kentinin 4. yüzyıl Hristiyan piskoposu Aziz Nikolaos'un mezar yeridir. Aynı zamanda Roma Katolikleri ve Doğu Ortodoks Hristiyanları için de önemli bir dini figürdür.

Aziz Nikolaos antik Yunan mermer ile gömülür. Fakat piskoposun kemikleri 1087’de Bari’den gelen tüccarlar tarafından çalınmıştır. Kemikler bugün hala Bari’deki katedralde tutulmaktadır. Anadolu’nun en önemli Bizans yapılarından kabul edilen kilise, duvar freskleri, mimari ve dini önemiyle de dikkat çekmektedir.

The Church of St. Nicholas, an old Byzantine (Eastern Roman) church, is located in Demre, Antalya today. St. Nicholas served as bishop in this church in AD 520. More precisely, this church was built on the foundations of the old Christian church. Its use is dated between the 5th and 12th centuries.

It is the burial place of St. Nicholas, the 4th century Christian bishop of the ancient city of Myra, which is the historical inspiration of Santa Claus. He is also an important religious figure for Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians.

Saint Nicholas is buried with ancient Greek marble. But the bishop's bones were stolen in 1087 by traders from Bari. The bones are still kept in the cathedral in Bari today. Considered one of the most important Byzantine structures in Anatolia, the church also draws attention with its wall frescoes, architectural and religious significance.
