The 500-year-old Moai statues on Easter Island in Chile are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Moai statues built by the locals 500 years ago on Easter Island, known as “Rapa Nui”, were severely damaged by a fire in Rapa Nui National Park. National park authority Ariki Tepano said the damage to the stone statues was "irreparable".
Rapa Nui Mayor Pedro Edmunds Paoa told reporters, "The damage caused by the fire cannot be repaired. The cracking of an original and symbolic stone cannot be recovered, no matter how many millions of euros or dollars are spent."
It was stated that more than 100 hectares of area were ash in the fire, and the efforts to control the fire were caused by the inadequacy of the teams.
