Also written as fleur-de-lys, fleur-de-lis or fleur-de-luce. It means lily in French. It is the emblem used in many places and coats of arms, especially the Kingdom of France. Since it will be difficult to write and read its real name, let's continue our way by saying lily flower.
The lily flower was a common symbol in medieval heraldry and is particularly prominent in French coats of arms. This symbol appears in many different forms and, although commonly associated with France, appears prominently in similar designs that date back to ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian art and ornaments.
It consists of three leaves, a horizontal band holding them. The stems of the leaves, which are upright in the middle and curled to the right and left on the sides, also protrude from under the band. It has various formats. In the fleur-de-lis au pied coupé or au pied nourri, the stems of the leaves are absent or replaced by a trapezoidal base. In fleur-de-lis remplie, called fleur-de-lis florencee or épanouie de, the stamens appear between the leaves, and the tips of the leaves are divided like flowers. In heraldry, the lily, which is depicted in its natural form intact, is called "lis-de-jardin" to distinguish it from the stylized fleur-de-lis.
The real importance of the lily flower stems from its long standing in the French royal coat of arms. It has been argued that the word fleur-de-lys is also a corrupted form of fleur-de-Louis (Louis-Clovis) that a lily was sent from Heaven as a symbol of purity to the Frankish king Clovis when he was baptized. But this figure may also have come from a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit. King Louis VI of France used this emblem both on his seal and on his coins. Shortly after Louis 8 wore a blue robe embroidered with gold lilies at his consecration, a blue shield sprinkled with golden lily flowers was adopted as the royal coat of arms. King Charles V of France limited the number of fleur-de-lys in the coat of arms to three in 1376, linking it to the Trinity.
Emblems resembling lily flowers have been used in art since ancient times in many parts of the world. But it did not always symbolize this flower. During the Hundred Years War, the kings of England also included the French coat of arms in their coats of arms to show their desire for dominance over France, and this was during the Second World War. It lasted until the time of George.
Today it is widely used on the flags of French communities around the world. There were six golden lilies on the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1998.
If there are scouts among us, they know that this lily is also used in the scouting crest. Because the lily is a flower that grows in all conditions and is resistant to all difficult conditions.
