Morpheus Yunan mitolojisinde düşler tanrısıdır. Babası uyku tanrısı Hypnos'dur. Bazı kaynaklara göre annesi gece tanrıçası Nyx, bazı kaynaklara göre rahatlamanın ve dinlenmenin tanrıçası Pasithea'dır. İnsanların rüyalarına girebilme, onlara rüyalarında görünebilme yetkisine sahiptir.

Ovidius'un metamorfozunda şöyle bahseder: Morpheus rüyalardaki insan unsuruna odaklanmıştır. Buna karşın kardeşleri Phobetor hayvan unsurundan ve Phantasos da cansız objelerden sorumludur. Morpheus özellikle kralların ve kahramanların rüyalarından sorumludur. Morpheusun kardeşi Phobetor kâbus,Phantasos ise fantastik rüyalar gördürür.

Morfin (eski adıyla morphium) de adını Morpheus'tan ve onun rüya görmeye sebep olan gücünden alır. Korku diye bildiğimiz 'fobi' adını kâbus görmeye neden olan tanrı 'Phobetor' dan alır. Fantezi kavramı da yine Morpheus'un kardeşi olan 'Phantasos' dan gelir.
