Every culture has an apocalypse. But among all these apocalypses, Ragnarök is the one we all know and are most interested in. Because we have all heard and seen from films and games. Yes, let's look at the Scandinavian Mythology apocalypse together.

Ragnarök means the apocalypse of the gods in the Old Norse language. But it is still similar in pronunciation to the word Ragnarøkkr, which means the twilight of the gods.

According to Norse belief, one day everything created, all worlds and all living things will come to an end. But like the apocalypses in all other cultures, Ragnarök will be preceded by signs of apocalypse in Midgard, the land of humans, abandonment of traditions, abandonment of the bonds of kinship and friendship are some of these signs.

Very harsh winters are also among the signs of the apocalypse. This winter will be such that it will last for three seasons without any summer in between, without any warm weather. Snow will fall from all four corners of the sky, the icing will be very severe, the wind will pierce the lungs and the sun will never warm. After a winter three times as severe and long as usual, three more similar winters come, when war and evil spread over the earth. Yggdrasil itself, the tree that holds the nine realms together, trembles with fear, and earthquakes increase as its branches shake. The seas are emptied of their basins, the sky is torn to shreds, and men begin to die in such great numbers that eagles begin to feed on their dying and still wriggling bodies.

While all this is happening, the gods' fears come true. Loki and his sons, Fenrir the wolf and Jörmungard, the serpent that engulfs Midgard, break free from their chains and take their places in the enemy ranks against the gods. As Loki, who goes to war with his terrible giant army, approaches on his ship Naglfar (Ship of the Dead), the watcher Heimdall sees them approaching and blows on the wall called Gjallarhorn. This sound signifies that Ragnarök has begun, and that the warriors honoured by Odin in Valhalla have been summoned to this battle.

As the giant people set out to destroy the whole universe along with the realm of the gods, Fenrir opens his mouth, his lower jaw rips the earth and his upper jaw rips the sky. So much so that even the sun itself almost lands in the stomach of this big wolf.

At the end of the battle, Odin is defeated by Fenrir the Wolf, but Odin's son Vidar is quick to avenge his father. Thor kills the great serpent Jörmungandr, but at the last moment the serpent vomits poison on him and he and Thor die soon after. Loki and Heimdallr also fight until they kill each other. Then the whole universe burns, the stars fall from the sky one by one and even the concept of time disappears.

In spite of everything, this period of poverty and death does not last long and Odin raises a new world from the seas. This world is full of abundance, fertility and goodness, there is no more room for curse and evil. The human race reappears, the gods are resurrected and continue their happy lives... Until the next Ragnarök...
