Ab-ı Hayat, the legendary water that gives immortality to the drinker, is also known as water of life, water of vitality or eternal water.
Bengi su is encountered in religious books other than myths and mythological texts, while telling the story of Musa, connected with the name of Hızır. According to the narratives, the first to drink this water were the prophets Hızır and İlyas. Although there are many narratives connected with the transmission of eternal water and eternal life, these narratives were thought to be associated with the names of a few people in ancient earth civilizations.
When the interdependence between the narratives was investigated, it was understood that the origin of the narratives about Bengi su was the Sumerians. The researches of the later periods, on the other hand, confirmed the view that the root of the narratives connected with Bengisu should be sought in older traditions.
The eternal water, sometimes called the water of vitality, is hidden in a dark and unknown world, which is defined as Zulmet. Alexander goes to Zulmet after Bengi water; but fails to obtain it. Bengisu related to his name has taken the signs of giving life, eternal life and immortalization from the first karma (chaossu), which is considered as the creative beginning, and has kept it within himself. In this sense, it is possible to find traces of the first water in the Bengi water symbol, like the beginning in the creation myth. That is, the life-giving power of water has led to the emergence of opinions in various belief systems that it is the power that brings eternity and gives immortality.
