DRAWING
Until the 20th century, oil paint called mummy brown was produced from mummy pieces.
PACKAGING SAUSAGES
Augustus Sandwood, an American paper merchant, imported mummies to make parchment paper from its wrappings. These mummies were too stained to be made of anything but brown wrapping paper, so Sandwood sold them to butchers and grocery stores. Later, when a cholera epidemic broke out in his workshop, the workplace was closed.
USE AS WEIGHT OR FERTILIZER
Cat mummies were used as weights to prevent ships from capsizing in rough seas. The mummies were also used as fertilizer in England until the public reacted.
LIGHTING
The natives of Egypt used mummy pieces to make fires, tearing off their arms or legs and burning them in dark tombs so that they could see their way.
FURNITURE
In 1971, the Nieman Marcus department store in America put 'male or female' mummy boxes in its catalog for as little as $5,000. The coffins were purchased by a museum, and later the mummy of a priest named Usermontu appeared in one of them.
