Launched into space on 23 July 1999, Chandra continues to discover exotic new phenomena and probe old mysteries, from objects in our own Solar System to almost the edge of the observable Universe.
These images represent a wide variety of objects observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory over a quarter of a century of observations. X-rays are a particularly penetrating type of light, revealing extremely hot objects and very energetic physical processes. The images range from supernova remnants such as Cassiopeia A to star-forming regions such as the Orion Nebula and the region at the centre of the Milky Way. This montage also includes objects beyond our own Galaxy, including other galaxies and galaxy clusters about 10.5 billion light years from Earth.
