A NEBULA FORMED FROM AN EXPLOSION 10 THOUSAND YEARS AGO: PEACH NEBULA
In this week's #HubbleFriday post, Hubble reveals an impressive celestial object.
The Veil Nebula is the remnants of a massive supernova explosion that took place about 10,000 years ago. The star that caused this explosion was about 20 times the mass of the Sun.
Hubble has observed this fascinating nebula before. By combining observations made in 1994, 1997 and 2015, astronomers were able to track the movement of the gas filaments and knots over time in more detail. This allows them to learn more about the dynamical structure of the Veil Nebula.
Image description:
A colorful, bright nebula extends beyond the top and bottom of the image. This translucent cloud of gas has thin filaments that are hard-edged in some places, and fluffy and opaque in others. Blue, red and yellow colors blend together to show light emitted by different types of atoms in the hot gas. Scattered throughout the colorful nebula are bright, dot-like foreground and background stars. The background is black.
