NASA Hubble first shared this close-up image of Caldwell 69, also known as the Insect Nebula, in 2004. The dying star at its centre glows like fire at over 450,000 degrees Fahrenheit (250,000 degrees Celsius) and is surrounded by a blanket of icy hailstones.
Caldwell 69 is one of more than 100 objects in the Caldwell catalogue of galaxies, nebulae and other cosmic wonders that can be easily observed by amateur astronomers.
Image description:
A close-up view of the Insect Nebula. Two large conical lobes, starting with a bluish-green hue and transitioning to red, radiate outwards from a bright centre. This bright spot is located near the upper right of the image and is largely focussed on this single lobe.
It looks like fire and ice at the same time. What do you see when you look at it?
