Hubble has captured the moment of a supernova, or the explosive death of a star in the galaxy LEDA 857074. This event can be seen as a bright point of light on the right side of the galaxy's centre bar.
This #HubbleFriday image shows that Hubble's space-based observing capacity offers a unique ability to study supernovae billions of light-years away, where other telescopes struggle. While ground-based observations of supernovae are often confused with the overall image of the galaxy, Hubble can distinguish the light of the supernova from the light of the galaxy and measure the supernova directly.
Image description:
Close-up view of a barred spiral galaxy. A bright, glowing bar passes through the centre of the galaxy, and fuzzy spiral arms curl from its ends and continue out of the field of view. Bright points of light, showing stars and background galaxies, surround the prominent barred spiral galaxy. The galaxy is also home to a bright supernova in the centre bar just to the right of the image centre.
Doesn't she look beautiful for dead?
