In the image, data obtained with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuStar) are superimposed on a photograph taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), revealing X-rays emitted from the Sun. Taken in 2014, this image is the first time NuStar has captured the western edge of the Sun.
The NuStar data, seen in green and blue, represent high-energy emissions, especially X-rays. SDO data in red represent ultraviolet light, revealing the presence of lower-temperature materials in the Sun's atmosphere. SDO continues to study the Sun from a geosynchronous orbit about 36,000 km (22,000 miles) from Earth.

A two-slide image of one hemisphere of the Sun. The Sun is agitated in deep reds and golds, while X-ray activity explodes in blues and greens above its surface near the centre of the image.
