The first image shows the Sunflower Galaxy, an enormous spiral galaxy about 27 million light years away.
The second image shows a galactic "rose", also known as Arp 273. This is a pair of interacting galaxies, with the larger galaxy under the gravitational influence of a smaller galaxy below it.
Image descriptions:
1 - A large spiral galaxy with a bright yellow core fills the image with loose spiral arms. These arms are filled with dark brown dust and bright blue regions of new stars.
2 - A large spiral galaxy with a pale orangish nucleus and arms filled with blue stars, covered with dark brown dust, is above a smaller galaxy seen more clearly. Both galaxies are visible in black space dotted with a few stars.
