This wonderful #HubbleFriday post shows the spiral galaxy NGC 5643. This galaxy is located in the constellation Lupus (Wolf), about 40 million light-years from us.
NGC 5643 is a symmetrical “grand design” spiral galaxy with two prominent and curved spiral arms.
The galaxy's spiral arms are characterized by bright blue stars, reddish-brown clouds of fine dust and pink-colored regions of star formation.
Image description:
A close-up image of a spiral galaxy. Its center is a bright white dot surrounded by a large yellowish oval in which thin lines of dust swirl. From the edges of the oval, two bright spiral arms emerge, winding across the galaxy's round disk, which is filled with bright pink spots where stars form and darker reddish dust. In the foreground, many stars can be seen above and around the galaxy.
