GRAVITATIONAL ATTRACTION DISRUPTING LIGHT FROM GALAXIES: ABELL 370

For more than three decades, Hubble has made science fiction a reality by observing the farthest reaches of the universe.

For example, this image, taken as part of the Frontier Fields programme, shows the Abell 370 galaxy cluster about 4 billion light-years away.

These giant galaxy clusters act like natural lenses, bending and magnifying light from distant galaxies behind them with their enormous gravity.

GRAVITATIONAL ATTRACTION DISRUPTING LIGHT FROM GALAXIES: ABELL 370

Image description:

A galaxy cluster fills the image, showing yellowish galaxies of different shapes against black space. A star in the foreground shines in the lower left. Curved, stretched lines of light show gravitationally lensed galaxies.
