In this new Webb image, the central galaxy cluster has such enormous mass that it distorts and magnifies light from more distant galaxies behind it - giving these galaxies their stretched shapes. This effect is known as gravitational lensing and allows astronomers to study some of the most distant galaxies in the universe.
Image description:
A galaxy cluster. Most of the visible galaxies are oval-shaped and smooth. A few have spiral arms in various directions. The largest galaxy is directly in the centre and near it are several images of background galaxies stretched and twisted into long arcs by gravitational lensing. The background is black and contains numerous small galaxies, but no stars.
It's beautiful, isn't it?
