At the new moon on December 30, 2024, the Moon's bright side was facing the Sun and its dark side was facing Earth. This long-exposure image, captured with a high-sensitivity camera, shows the moment on September 4, 2024, when the Moon disappeared behind Earth's colorful but pale atmosphere. The photo offers an astronaut's perspective during the new moon phase.
Astronauts looking on from the International Space Station (@ISS) watch the Moon rise and set 16 times a day, as the station orbits Earth about once every 90 minutes.
