Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is characterized by auroras at its poles that produce X-rays. But they are not the only X-ray sources around. In this image, the @NASAChandraXray telescope detected giant X-ray clouds surrounding Jupiter, some of which are even larger than the planet.
Auroras can be seen as thin purple streaks, especially around the north pole. In this unique frame, Jupiter was observed in infrared light by @NASAHubble.
Image description: In this composite image, Jupiter is set against the darkness of space, surrounded by neon purple blobs. Jupiter is presented in extremely sharp focus. More than a dozen swirling ribbons of gas, each with a different texture and shade of gray, outline its surface. The gas giant is surrounded by a thin, sky-blue ring, the same color as the large storm swirling on its surface in the lower right. Around Jupiter are large hazy blotches of neon purple.
