Europa, one of Jupiter's satellites, may have a vast ocean of salty water hidden beneath its icy crust.
Scientists believe Europa's ocean contains twice as much water as Earth's ocean. Our Juno spacecraft captured this image of Europa's cracked and striated surface on 29 September 2022 at an altitude of 945 miles (1,521 km). Juno has been studying the Jupiter system since 2016, including Europa, one of the most promising places in our solar system to look for life beyond Earth.
A number of telescopes and spacecraft have studied the Jovian satellite, including Galileo, the Hubble Long Range Telescope, Juno and most recently the James Webb Telescope, which detected carbon dioxide on the Moon. A new mission to study the Moon is being prepared: Europa Clipper will be launched in October 2024 and will search for conditions that could harbour life.
