Taken by the NASA Hubble space telescope, the Sharpless 2-106 Nebula is about 2,000 light-years from Earth and stretches for several light-years. This star-forming region looks like a celestial snow angel floating in space. Twin lobes of hot gas form "wings" that extend outward from the central star against a backdrop of a cold environment. A ring of dust acts as a belt, giving the nebula an "hourglass" shape.
Image description:
In the centre of the image, a bipolar lobe of light blue hot gas. Dark red veins surround the blue emission from the nebula. In the centre of the lobes, surrounded by red dust, is a young star known as IRS-4. The faint light from the star in the centre is reflected by tiny dust particles. Red dust and bright stars surround the nebula against a background of dark space.
Does it look like a snow angel to you?
