It was like night, but part of the sky was glowing purple. On the night of 10 May 2024, people around the world shared images of the spectacular aurora. This image was taken in the early morning hours in Arlington, Wisconsin, USA. This panoramic image, with the north at the centre, was created by combining several 6-second exposures covering two-thirds of the visible sky. The colours have also been made more distinct and electrical wires have been removed.
The photographer (foreground) stated that the aurora appears to flow from a point above, but only illuminates the northern sky. A few days ago, coronal mass ejections at sunspot AR 6443 caused energetic aurora particles to be emitted. This large active region moved to the dark side of the Sun last week, but is expected to return to Earth next week.
Doesn't it look too perfect?
