The closest active galaxy to Earth is Centaurus A, only 12 million light-years away, also known as NGC 5128. This galaxy was formed when two galaxies collided and has several remarkable features: a dark band of dust surrounding its center, shells of stars and gas in the outer regions, and jets of particles ejected outward by the supermassive black hole at its center. The composite image shown in the image was created by combining a total of 310 hours of visible light images taken over the past 10 years with a homemade telescope in Auckland, New Zealand. Centaurus A is classified as an active galaxy because it emits a wide spectrum of radiation, from low-energy radio waves to high-energy gamma rays.
